Cannabis Terminology & Classifications: Main Psychoactive Component — THC

Understanding cannabis starts with understanding its primary compounds. The most well-known is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) — the main psychoactive component responsible for the "high" associated with cannabis use.

What Is THC?

THC is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. When consumed, THC interacts with your body's endocannabinoid system, primarily binding to CB1 receptors in the brain. This interaction produces the psychoactive effects that cannabis is known for, including euphoria, relaxation, altered sensory perception, and increased appetite.

THC vs. CBD

While THC is psychoactive, CBD (cannabidiol) is not. CBD does not produce a high but has been associated with potential therapeutic benefits including anxiety relief, anti-inflammation, and pain management. Many products contain both THC and CBD in varying ratios, allowing consumers to tailor their experience.

Product Classifications

Massachusetts classifies cannabis products based on their THC content and form:

  • Flower: Dried cannabis buds, typically containing 15-30% THC. Effects are felt within minutes when smoked or vaporized.
  • Concentrates: Highly potent extracts (wax, shatter, live resin) that can contain 60-90% THC.
  • Edibles: Food and beverages infused with cannabis. Standard dose is 5mg THC per serving. Effects are delayed 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Tinctures: Liquid extracts taken sublingually for precise dosing and faster onset than edibles.
  • Topicals: Lotions and balms applied to the skin. Generally non-psychoactive as THC does not enter the bloodstream.

Start Low and Go Slow

Especially for new consumers, the golden rule is to start with a low dose and wait before consuming more. For edibles, wait at least 2 hours. For inhalation, wait 15-30 minutes. Everyone's tolerance is different, and finding your ideal dose takes patience.
